OWSD China National Chapter

    China is a founding member of OWSD, China National Chapter (CNOWSD) was founded in 2009 with over 100 members, and now based at UCAS. Its responsibilities include coordinating with the Secretariat of OWSD and the affairs in Asia-Pacific region; engaging in broader cooperation and exchanges; recruiting new members; jointly hosting professional training and academic seminars; enrolling OWSD fellowship awardees and more. At the 4th General Assembly of OWSD, Prof. Fang Xin was elected the President in June 2010. Prof. Wang Yanfen, Executive Vice Chair of University Council and VP of UCAS was elected President of CNOWSD in December 2023.

 

History

  • March 1989: Establishment of OWSD, China as a founding member
  • January 2009: Establishment of OWSD China National Chapter
  • June 2010: The 4th General Assembly of OWSD held in Beijing, Prof. Fang Xin was elected the President
           July 2008: CAS and OWSD signed the agreement for CAS-OWSD Fellowship
           September 2014: UCAS renewed the agreement for CAS-OWSD Fellowship with OWSD


Missions and Visions

  • Enhance existing collaborations, expand and deepen exchanges and collaborations with OWSD and relevant international organizations;
  • Improve the innovative capabilities for woman scientists in developing countries, and support them in assuming a greater role in scientific innovation, management, and/or policy-making;
  • Cultivate high caliber talents in science and technology by providing various types of training programs;
  • Contribute to sustainable economic-social development in developing countries in promotion of building a community with a shared future for mankind.

 

President

 

WANG YANFEN (China

 

    WANG Yanfen received her PhD in Ecology from the Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, China, in 2001. She joined University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS) in 2003. In 2005 she was promoted to Professor in Ecology and in 2008 became the Vice President of UCAS. 2018-2022, she served as the Executive Vice President of UCAS. From 2023, she has been appointed the Executive Vice Chair of the University Council and Vice President.

 

    Prof. Wang has also served as the Vice Chairman of the Ecological Society of China since 2018 and the China Society of Natural Resources since 2019. Since 2014 she has been an Independent Board Member of the International Center for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD). In the same year, she established the Yanshan Earth Critical Zone and Surface Fluxes Research Station in Beijing, China.

 

    Her current research interests include the structure and function of alpine grasslands and their response and adaption to human activities and climate change. Prof. Wang is particularly interested in biotic control over carbon and nitrogen cycling, and how they are influenced by climate change and human activities such as grazing and mowing. Accordingly, she has been engaged in exploring adaptive management toward sustainable grassland utilization in mountain regions under climate change. She has published over 200 papers in major scientific journals such as PNAS, National Science Review, Global Change Biology, and Journal of Ecology.
