The Fourth Conference of the Third World Organization for Women in Science (TWOWS) opened on June 27th at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. At the opening ceremony, Xi received a medal from TWOWS and presented awards to the winners of the first TWOWS Prize for Young Women Scientists.

Lu Yongxiang, Vice Chairman of the National People’s Congress Standing Committee and President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Wan Gang, Vice Chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and Minister of Science and Technology, delivered speeches at the opening ceremony. Chen Zhili, Vice Chairwoman of the National People's Congress Standing Committee and President of the All-China Women's Federation, attended the ceremony.

TWOWS President Jamil, representatives from the Elsevier Foundation, UNESCO, the InterAcademy Partnership, and the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World also addressed the opening ceremony, congratulating the successful convening of the conference and highly appreciating China’s efforts in hosting the event.

Founded in March 1989, TWOWS holds a general assembly every four years. This conference is jointly organized by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, TWOWS, and the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World. Over 600 female scientists from more than 50 countries and regions will discuss topics such as “Women Scientists and Frontier Scientific Development” and “Women and Global Change” during the conference.
